Ike Nwachukwu: Igbo General Who Fought Against Biafra

Ike Nwachukwu

Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu born on 1st of September 1940 in port Harcourt to an Igbo father and a Fulani mother, he is a retired Army officer and one of Nigerian politician, He served twice as Foreign minister of Nigeria and a senator in the National assembly delegation from abia state.

Nwachukwu had his early education at the ladi- lak institute, yaba, Lagos and Lagos City College same in Yaba Lagos. He obtained his initial military training at the Nigerian military Training College, Katsina, course 6. He then proceeded to the Royal Canadian School of infantry where he furthered his training at the school of infantry, Warminster, United Kingdom. Nwachukwu also studied at the institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo, Italy, the United Nations peace Academy and the National Institute for policy and strategic studies (NIPPS), Kuru, Plateau State. With these, he rose to the rank of Major general prior to his retirement with the Nigerian Army.

In view of this, Nwachukwu held the position of military Governor of Imo state; He moved Imo state university which is now Abia state university in Uturu to its permanent side during his tenure. He was also the minister of employment, labour, and productivity, from 1986 to 1987, where he founded the National Directorate of employment (NDE) to alleviate the problem of unemployment, especially graduate unemployed. He became the minister of Foreign affairs from December 1987 to December 1989 two years after been the minister of employment, labour and productivities; he was replaced with Rilwanu Lukman and returned to a field military command position.

Nwachukwu again was re- appointed minister of foreign affairs in September 1990, although he was later replaced by Matthew Mbu in January 1993 during the transition to civilian rule. He was active and effective as foreign Minister, who takes a mercantilist approach to diplomacy.

Among the Organizations and groups, Nwachukwu has served as chairman of the organization of African united liberty Committee. He served thrice in the organization of African States Council of ministers. The economic Community of West African States council of ministries, plenary sessions of the Non- Aligned movement and lastly the Governing Council of the African Regional Labour Administration Center are where he served as chairman.

Nwachukwu obtained resolutions from the United Nations on behalf of Nigerian when he headed and led several delegations to various international summits which includes;

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly and chairing united Nations special sessions on varying subjects, leading the organization of African unity ministerial Delegation to the conference for democratization of south Africa, and leading the Nigeria’ s negotiations for 21 and the convention at the Earth Summit in Rio de janeiro, Brazil.

As an Abia state senator, Nwachukwu also served as chairman of two senate committee; the senate Committee on power and Steel as well as the Senate committee on Government Affair.

Nwachukwu received Decoration and service Medals which includes:

1. The Nigerian independence Medal

2. The forces service star

3. The defense service star

4. The Nigeria Republic Medal

5. The national service Medal and

6. The order of commander, federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR).

He has been awarded with three national merit awards which are the special Certificate of merit of African Youth Congress, such as the Award of Recognition of the iron and steel senior association of Nigerian (ISSSAN) and the merit Award by Achike Uenwa, the former Governor of imo state on the occasion of the state’ s Silver jubilee.

In the international awards, Nwachukwu has been conferred with several international medals and awards, which includes the Grand Commander Of Equatorial Guinea, presidented by the president of Equatorial Guinea, the federal Republic of Germanys Grand cross of merit ( GMCS), the grand master of the national order of the Southern Cross (GMSC), which was from the president of Brazil, another was the Diplomatic medal( DMM) from the president of the south Korea, with more as the grand Cruz de la Order dei merito Civil de espana ( GCMC) by king Juan Carlos I of Spain, the knight Grand Cross of the Order of st Michael and ST George ( GCMG), Awarded by queen Elizabeth II of united Kingdom and finally received award as the commander of the order of mono ( COM) from Gnassingb’ e Eyadema, president of Togo.

In conclusion, Nwachukwu was a prominent general who fight against Biafra.
